Twenty-five centuries ago, at the end of a six-year journey into the human interior, or search for truth, Prince Siddhartha Gautama, 36, sat down under a fig, or Bodhi, tree in Bodhgaya, India. There, he fasted 49 days, achieving Enlightenment, or the Awakened State, during the process. ('Buddha' is Sanskrit for 'Awake'.)

Five-hundred years later, Christ, after disappearing without a trace during his most formative years--13 to 30, when he emerged from obscurity, asked John to baptize him, fasted 40 days and began his three-year ministry by proclaiming: "The Father and I are One!"--promised us we can be, also, by seeking the "Kingdom within".
