- Panax Ginseng
- Panax Ginseng is a widely known & used medicinal plant from China, Manchuria & Korea (also known as Chinese or Korean ginseng.) Ginseng has been
used in China for over 2000 years.
Ginseng is best known as an adaptogen, which means it balances different systems in your body.
Panax Ginseng:
- Helps stabilize blood sugar.
- Helps maintain & restore normal adrenal function.
- May help to prevent adrenal atrophy associated with corticosteroid usage.
- Supports the liver.
- Has estrogen-like effects.
- Protects against radiation.
- Exhibits an immune system stimulating/modulating effect.
- Increases tolerance of stress.
- May be effective for anxiety when it is stress-induced.
- Is helpful with menopausal symptoms.
- Is helpful with fatigue.
- Is useful for athletes in delaying physical fatigue from prolonged exercise & thus enhancing endurance.
- Reduces mental fatigue from mental stress.
- Has possible cancer preventive effects found in a large population study. The risk of developing cancer was markedly lower among people who used ginseng on a regular basis.
- Ginseng is safe when used at recommended doses. Long term usage may lead to menstrual changes & breast tenderness in women. Not recommended for pregnant or breast feeding women.
There are many inferior ginseng preparations on the market. Be sure to use a quality, standardized extract.
- Panc Tea®

- Pancreas
- The pancreas is typically a 6-inch long, 3-ounce gland situated transversely about 1-2 inches
above the bottom of the front rib cage and behind the stomach, touching the left kidney, left
adrenal and spleen. The pancreas has several types of cells.
One, the acini cells, secrete digestive enzymes such as trypsin and chymotrypsin (for digesting
proteins), amylase (for digesting carbohydrates), and lipase (for digesting fats), as well as
secreting water and bicarbonate ions to make the pancreatic juices alkaline for food digestion in
the small intestine. Common symptoms of a lack of these enzymes include gas and lower bowel
discomfort, foul smelling stools, and duodenal ulcers. Some common causes of dysfunction of
these aspects of the pancreas include eating too much refined foods (especially sugar, wheat flour
products and white rice), too many different foods at a meal, regular heavy snacking between
meals, B-vitamin deficiencies, too little hydrochloric acid in the stomach (often from use of
antacids), etc. Most of my clients lack pancreatic enzyme production and/or are deficient in
stomach acid.
The other types of pancreatic cells are the glycogon-producing alpha cells and the insulin-
producing beta cells. When blood glucose levels drop below 700 milligrams per quart of blood,
glucogon is normally secreted to convert glycogen into glucose and prevent blood sugar levels
from going too low, and to assure the brain gets enough of glucose, its main nutrient. Insulin has
several functions, of which we consider here only insulin's ability to convert glucose that is not
needed immediately into glycogen and fat for storage in the liver and skin. Excess glucose in the
blood is toxic, reducing the oxygen-carrying capacity of hemoglobin and the effectiveness of
various proteins in the body. The pancreas, adrenals, thyroid, pituitary and liver all cooperate in
maintaining stable blood sugar levels. Some symptoms of low blood sugar include fatigue, feeling
faint, weak, dizzy, shaky, irritable, light headed, depressed, poor memory, craving sweets, rapid
heartbeat, difficulty getting asleep again after awakening at night, learning "problems", emotional
rages, and a tendency to asthma and/or allergies. High blood sugar symptoms include weakness,
diarrhea, dehydration, increased urination, thirst, nausea, mood swings, headaches, shortness of
breath. Some of these symptoms, as always, can have other causes. A major cause of low or high
blood sugar is consumption of man-made sweet foods in place of natural foods with their much
lower natural sugar concentrations. E.g., a banana may be 20% sugar and a watermelon only 5%,
whereas typical breakfast cereals and salad dressings can be 50% or more, and cakes, pies,
doughnuts, etc, even greater. Such foods digest quickly, pass right into the bloodstream with a
consequent rapid rise in blood sugar levels which cause the pancreas to produce too much insulin,
resulting in a rapid drop in blood sugar levels, tempting us to eat sweets, and the cycle repeats
itself. Complex carbohydrates, vegetables and most fruits digest slowly and do not cause these
problems. Initially this leads to hypoglycemia, but after years of such overindulgence diabetes can
result. Incidentally, such overindulgence includes caffeine, chocolate, alcohol, smoking and many
"recreational" drugs such as marijuana, and all adversely impact also on the adrenals, pituitary,
thyroid, liver, and immune system. Snacking and overeating tend likewise. Space limitations
prevents our going into other causation factors.
[Dr. Christopher]
Almost everyone suffers from some sort of pancreatic disorder. Eating processed foods is one of the main causes of degeneration of the pancreas. In addition to producing insulin, the pancreas also produces its own natural bicarbonate of soda which is sent into the digestive tract to neutralize excess acids. Both "hypo" and "hyper" glycemia stem from the breakdown of the pancreas. This overactive or underactive pancreas affects the amount of bicarbonate of soda the pancreas produces. When there is not enough, the digestive tract can become overacid, thus leading to ulcerations. Dr. Christopher suggested his Pancreas Formula [Panc Tea] which included cedar berries to correct this disorder. other herbs in the formula are golden seal, uva ursi, cayenne, mullein, and licorice root.
- Panhemaglutinans
- Lectins that agglutinate all blood types. An example is the tomato lectin.
- Panic Attacks
- Acute anxiety is characteristic of panic attacks. The body's "fight or flight" reaction occurs at the wrong time. This reaction manifests itself by the body's increased production of adrenaline. The body's rapid production of adrenal hormones increases metabolism of proteins, fats, and carbohydrates. The body's muscles tense, and heartbeat and respiration's increase.
An individual having the attack is swallowed by the fear of disaster or death. At such times it is impossible to think rationally, and the more one tries, the more difficult it is to become realistic. Anxiety actually consumes the individual. Chest pain, dizziness, trembling, chills, nausea, and a distorted perception of time can accompany this disorder. After a few days, these stressors can cause generalized aches, which include muscle spasms, and pain, depression, nightmares, and early waking. Other sensations that may occur include digestive disturbances, which may include the urgency to urinate, and defecate. The unrealistic feelings of tension, and inability to relax consume ones thoughts. Therefore the stressed body is more vulnerable to free radical damage.
Food sensitivities and Leaky Gut syndrome are implicated in many cases of panic attack.

- Pantethine
- Pantethine is the stable structure of Pantetheine, which is the biologially active form of pantothenic acid (vitamin B5.) It is the precursor
to co-enzyme A (CoA.) Co-enzyme A plays a central role in the production of energy in your cells via a biochemical pathway called the Krebs'
cycle. This involves the production of energy from fats & carbohydrates. Pantothenic acid is also essential for adrenal gland function.
Chemicals known as acetaldehydes accumulate in your body from alcohol intake, cigarette smoking, chronic candida infections & vehicle exhaust fumes.
The aldehydes inhibit co-enzyme A & thus decrease energy production. Chronic aldehyde exposure also contributes to heart disease & has damaging
effects on brain function. Acetaldehyde also impairs the red blood cells delivery of oxygen to your body's cells. It also induces a deficiency of
vitamin B1, B3, & pyridoxal-5-phosphate. Pantethine has been found to help decrease aldehyde levels.
Pantethine is useful for:
- Decreasing cholesterol & triglycerides.
- Increasing HDL, thus creating a more favorable Chol/HDL ratio which is the atherogenic index of your body.
- Reducing cardiovascular risk by inhibiting platelet clumping & the production of the inflammation producing chemical, thromboxane A2.
- Protecting against some of the damaging effects of aldehydes from smoking, drinking alcohol, or chronic yeast infections.
- Helping with the symptoms of formaldehyde exposure in chemically sensitive individuals.
- Improving energy.

- Panty Hose
- [Dr. Schulze]
There's no air getting to this area. You're blocking the circulation, Panty hose cut off lymph. They are a lymph constrictor.
You know, we probably should go back, if women want, to the era of garter belts and silk stockings. It was certainly a more healthy thing to do: Use more natural fibers.
Don't forget that panty hose is made from petroleum. That's made from crude oil, i.e. gasoline. We're talking petrochemicals here, right next to our bodies.

- Papillary Dermis
- The papillary dermis contains vascular networks that have two important functions. The first being to support the avascular epidermis with vital nutrients and secondly to provide a network for thermoregulation. The vasculature is organized so that by increasing or decreasing blood flow, heat can either be conserved or dissipated. The vasculature interdigitates in areas called dermal papillae. The papillary dermis also contains the free sensory nerve endings and structures called Meissner’s corpuscles in highly sensitive areas.
- Paracelsus
- Paracelsus who was born Philippus Aureolus (1493-1541) took the pseudonym of Theophrastus Bombastus Von Hohenheim. He became a renown physician, alchemist and occultist. Supposedly he invented the name Paracelsus, which he was widely known by, which means "superior to Calsus." Celsus was an early Roman physician.

- Parasites
- Although technically any organism that lives off another host organism can be defined as "parsitic", according to Murray Susser, M.D., of Santa Monica, California, the term "parasite" refers specifically to those protozoa (single-cell organisms), anthropods (insects), and worms that invade and feed off host organisms, often causing harm. "Parasites have been co-evolving with man for millions of years." says Dr. susser, "and like viruses and fungi, teir presence in the body serves no known purpose."
Illness can often result when disease-promoting parasites, which frequently contaminate food and water supplies, are ingested. Parasites can also infest the skin, as with scabies or lice, or can enter the bloodstream through insect bites, as with malaria and yellow fever parasites. They can also deplete the body of essential nutrients taximg and overwhelming the immune system, which can lead to serious illness and even death.
Medical researchers are beginning to recognize that parasitic infections contribute to a variety of major diseases, including Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, arthritis and rheumatoid symptoms, chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), Epstein-Barr virus, and AIDS. In particular, a number of digestive complaints, such as diarrhea and irritable bowel syndrome, are now being linked to past or present parasitic infections.
In the United States, the most common human parasites, apart from head lice, are the microscopic protozoal variety, which can be transmitted by air, food, water, insects, animals, or other people. These tiny parasites include Giardia lamblia, a virulent form found in the contaminated water of lakes, streams and oceans, and a common cause of traveler's diarrea; Entamoeba histolytica, which can cause dysentery and injure the lover and lungs; Blastocystic hominis, which is increasingly linked to acute and chronic illness; Dientamoeba fragilis, which is associated with diarrhea, abdominal pains and pruritus (intense itching sensation of the anus), and loose stools. Another parasite, Cryptosporidium, poses a significant threat to those with immunoligic disease such as AIDS.
Besides lice, the most common of anthropod parasites are mites, ticks, and fleas. These parasites, in turn, can carry other, smaller infectious organisms, such as Borrelia burgdorferi, a coiled spirochete-shaped parasite that causes Lyme disease,
[Dr. Schulze]
Basically, one of the reasons people get parasites is that they don't have their bowels moving frequently enough. Animal food, especially meat, is loaded with parasites.
In fact, one of my patients was a zoology expert, and used to examine all types of meats because they feed meats to animals. And, he said their average cubic inch, that's cubic, nota square inch, had over a thousand parasite larvae in it. That's the average cubic inch of USDA, grade A beef.
He said that parasite larvae are rampant in animal flesh. He said that these parasite larvae don't do so much in the intestinal tract of, say, a carnivore. A carnivore's intestinal tract moves the animal food out in anywhere from three to eight hours. It goes right through the system. Carnivores have very short intestinal tracts.
But, he said, if you gave that same food, to, say, a horse, it would kill them. That's why long intestinal tract animals are usually herbivores. He said that, what basically happens in people, is that the parasite larva in meat have a while to sit in our belly.
And, see, this is where the problem is. It's not so much that we eat parasite larva, because, you can even get parasite larva on vegetables. It's that we are not having bowel movements. When you are supposed to have a bowel movement two to three times a day with your meals, and you are only having one two or three times a week, or every other day, or, even once a day, then the parasite larva can hatch.
These parasites start eating all the yummy stuff down there and, they can also crawl out and actually attach to the wall of your colon.
If you are moving your bowels regularly, it is the best preventive for parasites. So, what I always told my patients is, if you don't want parasites, make sure you have regular bowel movements.
The old story is that when you die, the worms don't crawl in, the worms crawl out. These parasites take over.
What I suggest is the two-step intestinal number one, and intestinal number two type program. We've given those formulas. I suggest the same type of thing to start. A person goes on the intestinal number one for a week, or until they have regular good bowel movements. The only difference is that when they start the second week, or when they have regular bowel movements, they start the intestinal number two.

- pH
- The degree of acidity or alkalinity of a solution is measured in terms of a value known as pH, which is the negative logarithm of the
concentration of hydrogen ions:
pH = 1/log[H+] = -log[H+]
On the pH scale, which ranges from 0 on the acidic end to 14 on the alkaline end, a solution is neutral if its pH is 7. At pH 7, water contains
equal concentrations of H+ and OH- ions. Substances with a pH less than 7 are acidic because they contain a higher concentration of H+ ions.
Substances with a pH higher than 7 are alkaline because they contain a higher concentration of OH- than H+. The pH scale is a log scale so a change
of one pH unit means a tenfold change in the concentration of hydrogen ions.
Living things are extremely sensitive to pH and function best (with certain exceptions, such as certain portions of the digestive tract) when
solutions are nearly neutral. Most interior living matter (excluding the cell nucleus) has a pH of about 6.8.

Blood plasma and other fluids that surround the cells in the body have a pH of 7.2 to 7.3. Numerous special mechanisms aid in stabilizing these
fluids so that cells will not be subject to appreciable fluctuations in pH. Substances which serve as mechanisms to stabilize pH are called buffers.
Buffers have the capacity to bond ions and remove them from solution whenever their concentration begins to rise. Conversely, buffers can release
ions whenever their concentration begins to fall. Buffers thus help to minimize the fluctuations in pH. This is an important function because many
biochemical reactions normally occurring in living organisms either release or use up ions.

- Phosphorus
- A non-metallic, allotropic element: poisonous and highly inflammable; symbol, P; atomic number, 15; atomic weight, 30.974. It occurs in three forms---white (yellow), red, and black. It is obtainable from bones, urine, and especially minerals, such as apatite. Phosphorus is an essential element in the diet; it is a major component of the mineral phase of bone and is abundant in all tissues, being involved in some form in almost all metabolic processes.
Typically a 12-oz. soft drink contains 50 mg. of phosphorus, in addition to lots of sugar
or harmful sugar substitute (phosphorus is also found in substantial amounts in fast foods to help
retain moisture and act as anticaking additives). Phosphorus has many metabolic functions. An
important one is the mediation of calcium levels by the parathyroid glands.
Calcium levels in the blood and tissues are largely controlled by the parathyroid hormone PTH in
conjunction with vitamin D. Additional PTH is produced when calcium levels are too low as a
result of 1) poor calcium absorption, 2) insufficient calcium in the diet, and/or 3) excess
phosphorus in the diet. Each of these three factors has become very common in the general
population. Blood calcium levels are raised by taking calcium directly out of the bones, leading in
time to osteoporosis, which in turn leads to hip fractures, collapsing of the spinal vertebrae, etc.
Other consequences of a high phosphorus/low calcium diet are muscle cramps, periodontal
disease and tooth loss, high blood pressure, kidney stones, atherosclerosis, chronic hoarseness,
a factor in Parkinson’s disease (at least treating
the parathyroids and balancing the phosphorus and calcium levels reduce trembling in Parkinson’s
patients), and a factor in mini-strokes (TIAs, transient ischemic attacks, which may produce one
or more of such things as paralysis, confusion, memory loss, slurred speech, dizziness, double
vision or temporary blindness). All of these sickness conditions associated at least in part with
increased phosphorus intake are on the increase.
Free phosphorus causes a fatty degeneration of the liver and other viscera, and the inhalation of its vapor often leads to necrosis of the lower jaw. Therapeutically, it was once used in rickets, osteomalacia, nervous and cerebral diseases, scrofula, and tuberculosis, as a genital stimulant in sexual exhaustion, and as a tonic in conditions of exhaustion.

- Pilonidal Cyst
- A special kind of abscess that occurs in the cleft between the buttocks. Forms frequently in adolescence. Any tract under the skin that
contains loose hair. A hair-containing cyst in the dermis or subcutaneous tissues, usually connected to the surface of the skin by a sinus tract;
generally situated in the scarococcygeal region. Also called sacrococcygeal cyst. A person with a pilonidal sinus is usually not born with it but
develops it in his or her late teens, twenties, or thirties. It occurs more often in overweight people and in men more often than in women.
In 1830, Herbert Mayo could never have imagined that his description of a hair-containing sinus would be the
subject of debates into the 21st century. This seemingly minor disease process has physicians baffled, as demonstrated by the multiple theories of
its etiology and management found in the current literature.
The term pilonidal (pilus-hair, nidal-nest) was coined by Hodges in 1880. As the name suggests, pilonidal disease consists of a hair-containing
sinus or abscess in the saccrococcygeal area.
Presentations range from asymptomatic pits in the intergluteal region, to painful draining lesions. Pilonidal disease has a male predominance and
usually affects patients from the mid-teens into the thirties.
Congenital and acquired theories of etiology have been proposed. For a time, the entity was referred to as Jeep rider's disease. It hospilatized
over 80,000 U.S. army soldiers during WWII, accounting for 4.2 million sick days. Much of the information we have about the disease comes from the
military.
If you want to think of a pilonidal sinus as a pain in the butt, that's fine with me although not everyone (including me) experiences pain with
the pilonidal sinus. Depending on an individual's history, the pilonidal sinus may be "open" or "closed". If it's open, it drains almost from
day one; if it's closed, it doesn't drain and as the pressure builds, it requires surgery to open it. In most cases, surgery is the only recognized
solution.

- Pityriasis Rosea
- It is a rash that occurs on the outer surface of the skin. The eruptions are flat, irregular sized and shaped patches which are dry and scaly. They are usually found on the trunk of the body and are occasionally on the shoulders, upper arms, hips, and thighs. The patches may be pinkish or a slightly tannish color.
There are two types of pityriasis that affects human beings. The first is called pityriasis rosea. In this case, the color varies from yellowish to salmon to red. The shape is round, oval, or irregular. These characteristics help differentiate the rash from other rashes such as measles, chicken pox, hives, and allergy. This condition is most commonly found on older children, adolescents, and young adults. It is heralded by one large patch somewhere on the upper trunk that is then followed by the appearance of other smaller patches gradually spreading down over the rest of the trunk, upper arms, and legs.
The rash is not itchy or bothersome in a physical way. The individual is not sick in any way. It is just there as something visible to patient and family. Pityriasis comes to the doctor's attention only because it is there and in need of diagnosis. Treatment is minimal to none.
The cause of pityriasis is not clearly known. However, it is thought to be due to some delayed reaction to an infection--usually a respiratory cold virus which the patient had a week or so previous to the eruption.
The rash comes on over a period of about ten days, stays without change for another week or two, and then gradually begins to fade. It takes about six weeks for all signs of the rash to disappear.
It is not contagious in any way and is not likely to ever appear again.
The Country Doctor has an essay about Pityriasis Rosea here .
- Pityriasis Versicolor
- Pityriasis versicolor differs from rosea in that the color of rosea is usually pink. Versicolor is a rash with various shades of pale yellow, faun and light brown. This type is also called tinea versicolor. It is caused by the fungus tinea, a class of fungus infections that includes ringworm of the scalp (tinea capitis) and ringworm of the groin (tinea cruris or jock itch).
Pityriasis versicolor confines itself to the shoulders and upper trunk. The patches often occur close together and often coalesce (grow together) to form large sheets or areas of rash.
The fungus that causes this eruption comes from the ground either directly as in suntanning or from the ground to the skin on clothing that has been in touch with the ground and by handling firewood.
The rash is very flat to the skin and appears to be no more than a discoloration or a lack of normal skin pigment. It can be present as a chronic thing year around seeming to fade some in the winter. During the summer it becomes more noticeable because the normal skin around the rash tans while the rash itself does not. If exposed to too much sun, the rash area will become pink to resemble a mild first-degree sunburn.
Once an individual is infected with pityriasis versicolor, the fungus can stay buried in the skin indefinitely so that the condition becomes a chronic or permanent thing unless it is treated with one of the newer antifungal creams. The cream is available by prescription from your doctor and must be used regularly and steadily over a long period of time to kill the fungus completely. This can take anywhere from a few weeks to several months. After that it is good to check for recurrences every few months or so because of its tendency to recur.
The Country Doctor has an essay about Pityriasis Versicolor here .
- Pituitary Gland
- The pituitary gland has two lobes in intimate association with each other. One lobe is a part of the hypothalamus (brain) and the other lobe
is part of the body's glandular system. Both lobes work in concert, but the posterior lobe (part of the brain) passes the messages of
the brain on to the anterior lobe (part of the body), which is the body's interface with the brain.
- Plagiocephaly
- There are 22 bones making up the skull that expand and contract an average of 16 times a minute (the "Priamry Respiratory Movement"). This
movement is why the skull bones do not fuse. There is only one bone in the "head" than doesn't have a joint to allow this movement to take place.
That is the jaw bone.
As you likely know, the jaw bone is not a part of the skull having developed as a body bone embryologically. It migrates to the skull in utero.
Anyhow, if the upper and lower teeth just touch that movement is not possible. Brief touching is not a problem but if the teeth touch all the time,
it IS a serious problem. 75% of all the oxygen (and other micronutrients) that go to the brain get there though the cerebrospinal fluid. Only 25%
gets there via the blood flow. The only thing that pumps the cerebrospinal fluid is the skull bones pulsation.
TMJ effectively locks this movement in place. THIS effectively reduces the hypothalamic capacity for storing stress-effect by 75%. If you have read
my book [Saving Yourself from the Desease-Care Crisis by Walt Stoll, M.D.] you know how that contributes to many chronic conditions.
This lack of movement of the skull bones is loosely called plagiocephaly--for want of a better name. Those professionals who re-establish this
movement are called Cranial Osteopaths although many Chiropractors are now taking the training.
Dr. Stoll has an essay about Plagiocephaly here .
- Plant Spirit Medicine
- Related to both flower essence therapy and indigenous medicine, plant spirit medicine has been described by practitioner Eliot Cowan as a "magico-religious rite, in which plant gods bestow their grace." The origins of illness, rather than the illness itself, are the focus of this therapy. Also central is the dream journey, a journey toward healing induced by the spirit of a chosen plant.

- Polarity Therapy
- Holistic therapy that combines therapeutic bodywork, dietary adjustments, counseling aimed at awareness and yoga-style exercises. Developed by Richard Stone, a chiropractor and osteopath who believed that illness or pain in the body was cured more readily when awareness and relaxation were included in treatments. He chose the term "polarity" to describe the basic nature of the electromagnetic force-field of the body. Useful in the treatment of respiratory problems, tension and stress.

- Preeclampsia
- Preeclampsia occurs when in addition to raised blood pressure there is evidence of a systemic or multi organ involvement and in the Davey and MacGillivray definition there is proteinuria. It is important to note that maternal and fetal complications can occur in the absence of proteinuria but these women should be considered to have preeclampsia. Conversely, proteinuria may precede the development of hypertension in many cases.
The "organs' involved include
- vascular system
- heart
- liver
- kidneys

- The Weston A. Price Foundation
- The Weston A. Price Foundation, a nonprofit, tax-exempt charity dedicated to the research of nutrition pioneer Dr. Weston Price, whose studies
of isolated nonindustrialized peoples established the parameters of human health and determined the optimum characteristics of human diets. Dr.
Price's research demonstrated that humans achieve perfect physical form and perfect health generation after generation only when they consume
nutrient-dense whole foods and the vital fat-soluble activators found exclusively in animal fats.
The Foundation's goal is the return of nutrient-dense foods to the American diet through education, research and activism. Its board and membership
support accurate nutrition instruction, organic and biodynamic farming, pasture feeding of livestock, community supported farms, honest and
informative labeling, prepared parenting and nurturing therapies. Specific goals include establishment of universal access to clean, certified raw
milk and a ban on the use of soy formula for infants.
Local chapters will serve to help consumers find locally grown organic and biodynamic produce as well as pasture-fed livestock and dairy products.
These groups will also work to educate students, consumers and legislators throughout the country about the importance of nutrient-dense whole foods
for optimum human health. The Foundation seeks to establish a laboratory to test nutrient content of foods, particularly butter produced under
various conditions; to conduct research into the "X" Factor, discovered by Dr. Price; and to determine the effects of traditional preparation
methods on nutrient content and availability in whole foods.
The board and membership of the Weston A. Price Foundation stand united in the belief that modern technology should be harnessed as a servant to
the wise and nurturing traditions of our ancestors rather than used as a force destructive to the environment and human health; and that science and
knowledge can validate those traditions. The Foundation's quarterly magazine, Wise Traditions in Food, Farming and the Healing Arts, is dedicated to
exploring the scientific validation of dietary, agricultural and medical traditions throughout the world.
It features illuminating and thought-provoking articles on current scientific research; human diets; nontoxic agriculture; and holistic therapies.
The journal also serves as a source for foods that have been conscientiously grown and processed. The first annual conference of the Weston A. Price
Foundation is scheduled for April 28-29 in the Washington, DC area. It will feature Tom Cowan, MD, Mary Enig, PhD, Edie Griffiths and
Sally Fallon.

- Prickly Heat
- An itchy rash that comes about because the sweat glands secrete faster than the pores can drain them. It has to do with excessive humidity as well as high temperature and will occur on those parts of the body that do not get air-dried very well. That includes the neck, arm pits, groin areas and other sites that are more heavily clothed and where skin surfaces come together (thighs, breasts and buttocks).
When sweating is extreme, the pinheads will become blister-like and may resemble small chicken pox eruptions. This type is called miliaria.

- Probiotics
- "pro-biotic" means for life or supporting life, versus "anti-biotic" which means against life or killing life, particularly with regard to microorganisms. Probiotics are organisms or nutrients which cause beneficial "friendly" bacteria to grow or flourish in the body, as opposed to antibiotics which destroy bacteria, often killing both bad and good bacteria indiscriminately.
Colon health and proper nutrient absorption depend on the presence of “friendly bacteria?in the digestive system. Probiotics are supplements
that provide these friendly bacteria, such as acidophilus, which reduce blood cholesterol, aid digestion, fight fungal infections, and enhance
the absorption of nutrients.
Friendly intestinal flora:
- Guard your body against harmful bacteria yeast and viruses
- Stimulate the function of your entire digestive system
- Produce essential vitamis and regulate their levels in your body
- Maintain your body's vital chemical and hormone balance
- Perform a vast number of essential task for maintaining high energy levels, proper immune function and for counteracting cancer-causing compunds in the colon.
- Progesterone
- [Dr. Schulze]
Wild yam is what the pharmaceutical industry used to make progesterone from. But it got too expensive, so they make it from horse urine.
- Progestin
- Women undergoing hormone replacement therapy with both estrogen and progestin are at higher risk of developing breast cancer than those taking
estrogen alone. Progestin, a synthetic version of the hormone progesterone, is taken in combination with estrogen by post-menopausal women because it
reduces the risk of cancer of the uterus by inducing the monthly shedding of the uterine lining.
Hormone replacement therapy is commonly used by post-menopausal women to ward off osteoporosis and bone fractures, and symptoms of menopause such as
vaginal dryness.
Risk Doubles With Combo--Those who were using or had recently used the combination progestin-estrogen therapy had a 40 percent higher risk of
developing breast cancer than women who did not take any hormones, the study found. The breast cancer risk was 20 percent higher among women who used
estrogen alone compared to nonusers.
Assessing the comparative risk of estrogen alone versus estrogen-progestin was complicated by the fact that use of estrogen alone was associated
with increased risk in lean but not heavy women. "We found differences between the two regimens among lean women but were unable to draw conclusions
among heavier women,?wrote study author Catherine Schairer of the U.S. National Cancer Institute in Rockville, Maryland. The report said women’s risk
of being diagnosed with breast cancer increased with each year of hormone treatment. The risk rose by 8 percent for each year of estrogen-progestin
use, and by 1 percent for each year of estrogen use alone.
The researchers examined 15 years of data on 46,355 women participating in a study on breast cancer screening, 2,082 of whom first developed the
disease between 1980 and 1995. In an editorial accompanying the study, doctors from Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital in
Boston noted the findings reinforced previous evidence of breast cancer risk associated with recent use of hormone therapy for long periods. This
has major implications for risk-benefit considerations because the risks of hip fracture and coronary heart disease ?primary targets of preventive
use of hormone therapy ?do not become large until a decade or more after menopause.
The Journal of the American Medical Association January 26,2000;283:485-491, 534-535.
COMMENT [from Dr. Mercola]: This 15 year study of nearly 50,000 women provides incredible insights as to just how dangerous progestins really are.
Progestins are synthetic progesterone and they appear to increase the breast cancer risk 800% above that of using estrogen alone. I cannot think of
one clinical situation where progestin (synthetic progesterone) are useful. The only reason they are being used is that the patent ran out on natural
progesterone many decades ago. The ideal way to address hormone replacement therapy is to normalize the adrenal glands. This is best done by accurate
salivary samples. Once the adrenal glands are normalized one can then consider the use of natural estrogen and progesterone if needed. My current
favorite laboratory for this assessment is Bio Health Diagnostics 800-570-2000.
- Proline
- Proline is a non-essential amino acid which can be formed from the amino acids, glutamate, ornithine, & arginine, or obtained from protein
foods such as meat, cottage cheese, & wheat germ. It is found in high concentrations in collagen & is particularly important for musculoskeletal
health. Collagen is comprised of almost one third proline residues. About half of your body's total proline is contained in collagen which is the
main supportive protein of your skin, tendons, bones, cartilage & connective tissue.
Vitamin C deficiency will cause proline to be lost in the urine because of collagen breakdown. This is an early sign & precursor of degenerative
disease.
Useful for:
- Skin health.
- To decrease soft-tissue injury proneness as with athletes.
- To speed the healing of soft tissue injuries.
- For ligament, tendon & all connective tissue health.
- Propacet 100

- Propyl Alcohol
- A very common solvent found in many cosmetics and food products. Dr. Clark identifies the accumulation of propyl alcohol in the body as a leading
cause of cancer.
BUT SOMETHING SPECIAL HAPPENS TO PEOPLE WHO HAVE PROPYL ALCOHOL IN THEIR BODIES. The liver is unable to trap and kill these tiny fluke stages.
These baby-stages are actually allowed to make their home in the liver and other tissues. It is as if the immune system has no power to kill them.
The flukes begin to multiply in people with propyl alcohol in their bodies! The miracidia (hatchlings) start to make little balls inside themselves,
called redia*. But each redia (ball) is alive! It pops itself out of the miracidia and begins to reproduce itself. 40 redia can each make 40 more
redial. And all of this out of one egg!
This parasite is laying eggs and producing millions of redia right in your body! In your cervix or lungs, wherever your cancer is growing! These
redia are swept along in your blood landing in whatever tissue lets them in. Smokers' lungs, breasts with benign lumps, prostate glands full of
heavy metals are examples of tissues that give the redia their landing permits.
As if these parasites were not fiendish enough, as soon as there are adults in the liver something NEW happens. A growth factor, called
ortho-phospho-tyrosine appears. A monster has been born! Growth factors make cells divide. Now YOUR cells will begin to divide too!
Now you have cancer.

- Protein
- any of a group of complex organic compounds which contain carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and usually sulfur, the characteristic element
being nitrogen, and which are widely distributed in plants and animals. Proteins, the principal constituents of the protoplasm of all cells,
are of high molecular weight and consist essentially of combinations of amino acids in peptide linkages. Twenty different amino acids are commonly
found in proteins, and each protein has a unique, genetically defined amino-acid sequence which determines its specific shape and function.
They serve as enzymes, structural elements, hormones, immunoglobulins, etc., and are involved in oxygen transport, muscle contraction, electron
transport, and other activities throughout the body, and in photosynthesis. They may be classified as: 1. Simple or globular proteins, including
most of the proteins in the body, are generally soluble in water or salt solution and yield only amino acids on complete hydrolysis. Based mainly
on their chemical properties, this class includes albumins, globulins, histones, and protamines. 2. Fibrous or fibrillar proteins, the principal
structual proteins of the body, are generally insoluble. The major types of this class are collagens, elastins, keratins, and actin and myosin.
3. Conjugated or compound proteins are those in which the protein molecule is united with a nonprotein molecule or molecules
(the prosthetic group) otherwise than as a salt. They include nucleoprotines, mucoprotines, lipoproteins, chromoproteins, phosphoproteins,
and metalloproteins.
The word "protein" derives from the Greek word "protos" meaning first.
[Dr. Schulze]
It's been proven again and again that with high protein in your system, all the calcium in your blood gets urinated out, or a very large percentage of it.
Another thing I've noticed in my research, according to the Department of Agriculture, is that the average American diet has 200 to 250 percent, or 2 to 2 1/2 times, the protein requirement that we need. One of the things that has happened with the good life is not only an excess of cholesterol and an excess of fat, but too much protein.
- Proton
- An elementary particle of positive charge which forms the nucleus of the ordinary hydrogen atom of mass 1; along with neutrons, protons form the nuclei of atoms of all other elements. The proton is the unit of positive electricity; it has one quantum of charge (1.6 x10-19 coulomb) equivalent to the electron but of opposite polarity, and its mass is 1.67 x 10-27 kilogram, approximately that of the hydrogen ion. Symbol p.
- Protoplasm
- The viscid, translucent, polyphasic colloid with water as the continuous phase that makes up the essential material of all plant and animal cells. It is composed mainly of nucleic acids, proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, and inorganic salts. The protoplasm surrounding the nucleus is known as the cytoplasm and that composing the nucleus is the nucleoplasm.

- Prune Belly Syndrome
- A rare genetic condition.
Also known as Eagle-Barrett syndrome, the Prune Belly syndrome consists of a triad of features:
- Anterior abdominal wall: musculature is deficient or absent.
- Urinary tract anomalies (mega-ureters, large bladder).
- Bilateral cryptorchidism (undescended testicles).
The incidence of prune belly syndrome is 1 in 40,000 live births; 95% of cases occur in males. In the past, it was suggested that the abdominal wall was deformed by pressure from a distended bladder due to bladder outlet obstruction in utero. Currently it is thought that prune belly syndrome is a multisystem disease complex which derives from a primary defect in mesodermal development.
The major prognostic factor is the degree of dilation of the urinary tract; 20% of patients are stillborn, 30% die of renal failure or urosepsis within the first two years of life, and the remaining 50% have varying degrees of urinary pathology.
The Prune Belly Syndrom network is here.

- Pruritus
- Intense itching sensation of the anus.
- Psoriasis
- Psoriasis is caused when skin cells replicate too
rapidly, which causes them to pile up and form the characteristic silvery
scales. Two compounds within skin cells control cell replication: cAMP
decreases replication, and cGMP increases it. Patients with psoriasis have
too much cGMP and too little cAMP. Many natural therapies help to reestablish
a normal balance of these compounds.
Toxins produced in the bowel -- either from poor protein digestion or from
the overgrowth of bacteria and yeasts in the bowel -- may contribute to
psoriasis because the toxins inhibit cAMP and increase cGMP. Increasing
dietary fiber (which absorbs toxins), improving digestive function and
decreasing levels of toxin-producing bacteria and yeast will all help. Fiber
should be water-soluble; try pectin or psyllium. Since food allergies and
intolerances can interfere with proper digestive function, it may be helpful
to eliminate foods that are highly allergenic, such as dairy, citrus, wheat,
corn, eggs and soy. Allergy testing, elimination diets and rotation diets can
help you identify food allergies. Lactobacillus acidophilus supplements can
promote a normal balance of intestinal bacterial flora.
Individuals with psoriasis also have greater-than-normal production of
inflammatory compounds in their skin, called leukotrienes. Leukotrienes also
promote increased cGMP. Leukotriene production can be discouraged by reducing
your intake of arachidonic acid (a substance found primarily in meat and
animal fat) and increasing your intake of omega-3 oils (from cold water fish
and flax seed oil). Other natural products that can decrease leukotriene
production include flavonoids like quercitin, the herb milk thistle, vitamin
E, garlic and onions.
Psoriasis patients often have low levels of vitamin A and zinc, both
necessary for healthy skin. Supplements of these will help to ensure normal
skin formation.
Herbs that can help decrease cGMP levels and have been shown to be helpful
for psoriasis include sarsaparilla, goldenseal, coleus and bitter melon.
Topical applications of chamomile, glycerrhetinic acid from licorice and
capsaicin from cayenne have all shown good effects in psoriasis. It is
important to avoid herbs that contain inulin (dandelion, echinacea, burdock)
and ginseng, as they can increase cGMP levels. Also limit vitamin C intake to
1,000 mg per day and biotin intake to 50 mcg per day -- both can exacerbate
psoriasis in larger doses.
Other steps that may help include eliminating alcohol, getting some sun
exposure and managing stress.
Food sensitivities and Leaky Gut syndrome are implicated in many cases of psoriasis.
[I found this in one of the newsgroups]
Second, I should forewarn you I come from a metaphysical background and I believe that my psoriasis happens for a reason. Because of numerous horrible experiences, I deal with a fear of men almost daily. I have noticed that when I start dating someone, my psoriasis flares up almost acting as a barrier to any intimacy.

- pyridoxal-5-phosphate
- Intake is frequently low & this nutrient is commonly deficient in pregnant women, children, the elderly & the ill. It is also depleted by birth
control pills, alcohol, tobacco, some antibiotics, blood pressure medication, and numerous other prescription drugs.
Without adequate vitamin B6, the amino acids in dietary protein are not of much use to you. Vitamin B6 literally controls the amino acid absorption,
metabolism & transformations in your body. It also directly participates in carbohydrate & fat metabolism, as well as the formation of red blood
cells & antibodies. It is necessary for the absorption & utilization of certain minerals & is required for the proper functioning of over sixty
enzyme systems in our bodies.
It is important to take the active co-enzyme form of B6, pyridoxal-5-phosphate (P-5-P.) Many B6 supplements are the inactive pyridoxine HCL form.
In some cases, supplementation of the pyridoxine HCL form singularly and in doses as low as 200 mg daily over 3 years caused a reversible
numbness & tingling of the extremities. This problem was thought to be secondary to the liver's inability to convert the pyridoxine HCL to the
pyridoxal-5-phosphate form (which requires vitamin B2, magnesium & a well functioning liver.) Using P-5-P avoids this problem.
Supplementation increases the production of serotonin, norepinephrine, GABA, dopamine, & other neurotransmitters.
Pyridoxal-5-Phosphate:
